Extending the Visa Directly from the Vietnam Immigration Office

If you will choose to process the extension of your visa by yourself, you need to first prepare the required documents. Here are the documents needed:

  • Form NA5 – you can download this form online.
  • Original copy of your passport
  • Documents showing proof of temporary residence declaration

Once you have all these documents with you, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Download the NA5 form online and print the form (Form NA5 for visa extension). Fill out the form completely.
  2. Bring the form to the Immigration Office in Ho Chi Minh City along with your passport and the temporary residence declaration document. The address is at 254 Nguyen Trai Street, Ward 6, in District 1. They are open from 8 AM to 11: 30 AM from Mondays to Saturdays. From Mondays to Fridays, the office is only open from 1:30 PM to 4 PM.
  3. Wait for up to 5 business days for the result of your visa extension request. The normal process is 5 – 7 working days if you’re requesting a one-month visa but this could take up to 10 working days if you’re requesting a 3-month visa.

Depending on the type of visa that you currently have, you will need to have a sponsoring entity for the extension of your visa. The NA5 form that you will submit must be signed and stamped by the direction of the entity before you submit the form to the immigration office.

It is usually takes 5-7 business days to get your e-visa extended and please note that your e-visa and passport will be kept by the Immigration Department of Vietnam during this period. Your e-visa can be extended faster if you are stay in Hanoi city because Hanoi is the only place for e-visa extension.

As per regulation from the Immigration Department of Vietnam, e-visa holders can get their visa extended if they have a company or someone in Vietnam sponsoring or guaranteeing for their stay in Vietnam. Therefore you need to contact a travel agent in Vietnam for support.

Those who will not be able to get out of the country before their e-Visa expires will have to pay for a hefty penalty. If you are holding an e-Visa and you have overstayed for less than 3 days, you will have to pay for around $22 per day at the Vietnam Immigration.
