Vietnam resume visa-free policy for citizens of France starting from March 15, 2022

The Covid 19 pandemic has brought travel to a standstill and caused massive disruption in the travel and tourism industry. From March 2020, when the virus started spreading rapidly, Vietnam has to close its borders and limit the entry of foreign travelers. In line with this, the country has to stop issuing tourist visas and has suspended the visa-free entry of foreigners who were part of the visa waiver program.

But the suspension was only temporary. Now that everything is back to normal, foreign visitors can now go back to Vietnam and enjoy a relaxing vacation.  The French nationals are among those foreign individuals who are allowed to enter Vietnam even without a visa. Under the visa waiver program, they are not required to present any visa at Passport Control to be able to enter Vietnam.

The Vietnam Visa Waiver Program

Under the Visa Waiver Program of Vietnam, more than 20 foreign nationals are allowed to enter the country visa-free. Established in 2015, the program aims to invite more foreigners into the country to boost its tourism industry. Initially, the program was scheduled to commence last December of 2019. But because it has been successful in inviting foreign visitors, they have decided to extend it until December 2022. So if you’re a citizen of France, you can still take advantage of this privilege.

However, it should be noted that this program would only allow foreigners to stay in the country for 15 days. If your planned vacation is more than 15 days, then you need to get a visa for your trip.

Temporary Suspension of Visa-free Entry Due to Covid 19

When the coronavirus started spreading fast, countries around the world have to initiate steps to stop the spread of the virus. Vietnam, for its part, has banned the entry of foreign visitors. They have not only stopped issuing visas but they also suspended the visa-free entry of those who were under the visa waiver program. This has affected the travel plans of French travelers who have plans to visit Vietnam for a holiday.

But then again, this suspension was only a temporary decision. Vietnam is once again accepting foreign visitors. These include French citizens who wanted to take advantage of the visa-free entry.

Vietnam Visa-free Entry Requirements for Citizens of France

Remember that even though you no longer need a visa to enter Vietnam, you are required to comply with some requirements in order for them to let you in. The visa-free entry applies to tourism and business travel. So here’s what you need to show at Passport Control to be able to enter Vietnam:

  • Valid passport – French citizens who wanted to take advantage of the visa-free entry must be able to present their passport. The passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. Furthermore, it should have two blank pages for the entry stamp.
  • Proof of onward travel – a proof of onward travel must also be presented. This comes in the form of a return ticket or a departure ticket. The departure date of the ticket should be within 15 days from your date of entry. As mentioned, you’re only allowed to stay in Vietnam for 15 days under the rules of the visa waiver program.

Applying for a Vietnam Visa for Citizens of France

For most travelers, 15 days is certainly not enough to enjoy everything in Vietnam. So if you feel like you needed to stay in Vietnam for much longer than that, then you should get a visa. There’s really nothing to worry about because applying for a visa to Vietnam is so easy. As a matter of fact, French citizens are qualified to avail of two types of tourist visas. You can apply for the e-visa, which grants you a stay of 30 days. If you want to stay longer, then go for the visa on arrival. What’s great about this visa is that it will let you choose between a single entry and multiple entries. Plus, you can choose to stay in Vietnam for up to 60 days!

To apply for the e-visa, all you need to do is fill out a form online. Submit the requirements needed and make a payment. Once your e-visa is approved, it will be sent through your email so there’s no need to go at the embassy to claim it. Just print the visa and use it to enter Vietnam.

For the visa on arrival, you are required to fill out a form online ahead of your trip. In exchange, they will give you a pre-approval letter. When you arrive at the airport of Vietnam, just go to the Visa Landing Counter. Show the letter and submit your passport and other requirements. Then they will attach a visa sticker on your passport.
